Email Marketing is often described as “a way to send mass mailings via electronic means”. In reality, it involves many things more than that but what it boils down to is this – it’s about building relationships with your customers using technology. What I mean by that is that your customers are not just recipients of your emails; they become active participants in your business. They tell their friends about their experience, visit your social media pages to get updates on promotions and product offerings, join online forums and groups related to your industry, and even submit reviews on sites like Google and Yelp. The list goes on.

In my 20+ years of running an e-mail marketing campaign, here are some of the best tips that I have learned along the way.

1 – Be Personal

The first tip I would give you is to make sure that your emails don’t seem cold and generic. When people receive them, they want to know who sent them and why they were chosen. You need to let them know about yourself, your company, and what value you can bring to them.

2 – Keep Your Subject Line Short & Sweet

People scan through hundreds of emails a day and if yours doesn’t stand out, it’s going to be lost in the mix. Make sure to keep subject lines short and sweet. You’re trying to grab attention right away and saying something relevant will help. If you think about it, you might come across as being too self-promotional or sounding spammy!

1. Do not underestimate the power of email marketing. Email marketing is a proven way of keeping in touch with your customers. Most people have active email addresses and you can stay in touch through regular emails. You can use these emails to offer discounts, updates, deals, newsletters, promotions, etc.

2. A well-designed newsletter is a great tool that will help you keep in touch with your subscribers. If you are using an email service provider, your design should be simple – this means avoiding too much text and imagery. Keep your message short and sweet and avoid sending more than 2-3 emails per month.

3. Make sure your subject lines are relevant and enticing. Avoid overusing keywords. Use A/B testing to figure out what works best.

4. Provide value. You don’t want to send spammy messages; rather, provide useful information and content. Let your audience know about upcoming events, product launches, contests, giveaways, etc.

5. Include call-to-actions (CTAs) at the end of each email. CTAs enable your readers to take action. They may include links to products, signup forms, downloads, social media buttons, etc.

6. Always reply to any feedback you get from your users. This shows them that you care about their opinions.
